Teen Acne: Fact and Fiction
What Is It?
- Teen Acne is genetic
- Increased oil irritates pores, causes cell build-up…and whiteheads appear
- Cellular wall breaks down, becomes red and inflamed, and becomes a pustule
But What Really Causes Teen Acne?
- Not diet, according to our research
- Not dirty skin
- Teen Acne starts below skin surface
- Sexual activity will not prevent it
What Aggravates Teen Acne?
Stress is the Number One aggravating factor in teenage acne. But there are others to consider, too:
- Not enough sleep
- Certain cosmetics [see: Cosmetics and Acne]
- Friction from headbands, backpacks, athletic shoulder pads
- Drugs (including Lithium and Adamosis)
- Touching your face (fingernails are a bacterial nightmare)

What To Do About Teen Acne?
Thankfully there are better options to treat teenage acne today. They include:
- Topical vitamin A’s that peel out impacted pores
- Benzoyl peroxide kills bacteria inside pores
- Alpha-hydroxy acid and mandelic acid encourages dead skin cells to slough off
To treat teen acne use alpha hydroxy acid or mandelic acid in the morning and vitamin A at night because glycolic and mandelic acid removes the dead skin cells and at night vitamin A produces new skin cells that don’t stick to pores.
• Sleep and a well balanced diet, while not a cause of teen acne, is crucial to better skin. Why? Because it produces less stress, allows the body to heal and rejuvenate.
So Why Do Teenagers Get All The Bad Luck?
Simple. It’s because teen acne is an inherited disease and, with all of those hormones circulating during the teen years, it only aggravates the teenage acne condition that your parents gave you. Don’t worry, though. It should be over by the time you leave college and enter the work force. Make peace with teen acne by treating yourself healthfully and treating teen acne with superior quality products. They might cost more but, hey…what are parents for, right? |
