Chocolate used to be considered one of the aggravating factors that made acne worse, but medical studies conducted and published in 1968 by Dr. Fulton proved this not to be true. Iodides such as those found in multivitamins and food products containing kelp are an exception. The iodide is excreted through the sebaceous gland and irritates the lining of the follicle, thus aggravating acne.
Acne cosmetica, a condition characterized by numerous closed and open comedones, is caused by cosmetics containing derivatives of fatty acids that are more irritating and comedogenic than the fatty acids in the skin. Using a clay or water based cosmetic may alleviate this problem, although it is recommended that no cosmetic be applied over acne.
Lack of sleep and stress will flare acne. Exercise is an excellent stress reducer, and part of every day should be devoted to some form of exercise, and it is important to get seven to eight hours of sleep a night.
Oral antibiotics used to be the treatment of choice for acne. They will kill a small amount of the C. Acnes, but not enough to make a significant difference. The AHA’s and Vitamin A conditioning lotions are topical keratolytics that promote cell turnover to regulate the keratinization of the epidermal cells. This avoids the hyperkeritinization that contributes to follicular blockage. Once these plugs are loosened and pushed out of the follicle the acne improves. Used regularly keratolytics will keep the cells from becoming impacted in the pore.
